Checking in on New Year's Resolutions

For New Year's 2014, I decided to make up some resolutions that would be fun, instead of dreaming up ones that would be impossible and then inevitably abandon until next year and feel horrible about myself for my lack of commitment. Rinse, repeat, for 2015, 2016, etc.

Looking back, a few months later, I think I'm actually doing a decent job. I've already got a few under my belt with quite a bit of the year left. I've never been so successful with resolutions!

Here they are:

1. Try Jaques Imo's alligator cheesecake
Nope. Not yet. Though I will say that the best dish I've tried all year is the Burrata Crostini and Tomatoes at Mariza. Go try it! Now.

2. Make the Zulu parade
Ha! I barely made it out of the house on Mardi Gras Day. With the record cold temperatures and all the rain, going to a parade was about the last thing I wanted to do. I did make it over to Bud Rip's for awhile, taking in all the brave revelers and their soggy costumes, but just ended up going back home and watching my new copy of Thor 2. It was actually a very nice time and relaxing day.

I guess I'll have to put this one on the list for next year. I can only hope for sunshine and at least slightly warmer temperatures.

3. Be in a Mardi Gras parade

Checking in on New Year's Resolutions
I did it! I was in the Intergalactic Krewe of Chewbacchus parade as one of the "Party Elves of Mirkwood." I can't even begin to describe how much fun it was. I spent days making light-saber Mardi Gras beads and spent quite a bit of time in front of the mirror applying elf ears while gluing quite a bit of my hair to the side of my face. Can't wait til next year!

4. Take the ferry
Nope.

5. Ride my bike down the levee

Nope. I'm actually planning on taking one of my reader's suggestions and doing a "two-for-one," taking the ferry as well as riding my bike down the levee and making a loop. It sounds like an adventure.

6. Make it to New Orleans Comic Con

Checking in on New Year's Resolutions
Yes! I did this. I had a lot of fun, saw some cool costumes, bought too much stuff, and had quite a bit of trouble bringing it all back home with me on my bike. I didn't end up meeting anyone famous, mostly because I just can't see spending that kind of money to meet a person while feeling incredibly awkward. But I did meet a very convincing Tenth Doctor.

7. See a Prytania Theater midnight showing

Checking in on New Year's Resolutions
Yes. This was actually amazing. I'm not sure I've ever laughed so hard in my life. My friends and I went to see The Room, which for those of you who don't know, is known as the greatest bad movie of all time. There are special viewings of it every once in awhile, sort of in the manner of Rocky Horror Picture Show … it has quite the cult following.

I was also lucky that one of the actors, Greg Sestero, was at the viewing. He was signing his book about the movie, The Disaster Artist. It's seriously the funniest book I've read in a long time and is apparently being turned into a movie by James Franco, which should be interesting. I highly recommend the book.

I also highly recommend making it down to The Prytania to see their next viewing of The Room. It's a great time.

8. Go to the beach
This one is coming soon. My job is actually sending me to Mexico to basically eat and write about eating — it's pretty much a dream come true. I'm still kind of slapping myself about it, not quite believing that it's true. But I am going! To a beach!

9. Head to the swamp
Nope. And I should probably do this soon before it gets too hot to be enjoyable.

10. Make it outside of New Orleans
As in travel to other places around Louisiana. I haven't. I'm a bad Louisianan. I should at least go see Cajun Country or take a drive to Grand Isle. Something. So far this year, all I've done is go to Baton Rouge, and that was for a funeral … so, yeah. Not doing so good on this front.
