Recently, my husband and I decided to rewatch the decades old TV series, “Lost.” For those of you who have never seen it, the show follows the survivors of a plane crash on a remote and mysterious island. The main characters run the gamut of archetypes: hero, anti-hero, innocent, explorer, etc. But the most successful survivors (meaning still alive) display a healthy blend of all the characteristics. As I binge-watch the show and simultaneously scroll for breaking news on my phone, I can’t help comparing the fictitious dramas played out on my TV screen to our current real-life political climate. The parallels are glaring. On “Lost,” the survivors form groups to achieve near miracles, but in time break apart only to lose all progress for one petty reason or another. At worst they deceive their closest comrades and at best they are a high functioning family. What is evident in both realities is that Americans and deserted island survivors alike are best when working together towards a common goal.
The “Lost” characters have the shared dream of an island “rescue” to unite them. For Americans, perhaps fortuitously, we have the chance right now (albeit briefly) to forget our political woes and come together for a patriotic but not politically charged goal: The Olympics (Team America). It’s the shot of cool air we need in this warming political climate. A chance to proudly don our red, white and blue to cheer on team America in our quest to be the best. So, let’s gather and appreciate this time to unite for Team America. As for the Lost characters, I am not sure they will ever get rescued but here’s hoping they keep working together one common goal or another.
Here is the Olympic coverage TV schedule on NBC. And here’s what I will be wearing to cheer them on!

Lagniappe:
If you want to get literal, you can buy an outfit directly from the official Olympics’ outfitter, Ralph Lauren. Most of the USA Olympic Collection is blazoned with RL and Olympic logos which, the practical side of me says I won’t wear after this month. If you are set on a collector’s item, I recommend this tee and these track pants that you can wear any old time!
Also, here are my favorite official Olympic uniforms from all over the world!
Team France, Stéphane Ashpool
Team Mongolia, Michel & Amazonka (my personal fave)
Team Ireland, Laura Weber
Team Haiti, Stella Jean
Team Great Britain, Ben Sherman
