Cocktail Culture in the City

We know this is the time of year when we pledge to be kinder, warmer and gentler. It’s a time of renewed spirit and promises of a happy new year. With  that said, this is also the time to consider the possibilities of altering how we drink, where we drink and how we order our favorite cocktails. Let’s raise a glass and enjoy the valiant efforts of our local bars and bartenders who, like us, are finding creative ways to keep our palates satisfied.

Flamingo a-Go-Go (869 Magazine St.) offers an electric and eclectic experience. The atmosphere is fun and provides for awesome outdoor day drinking and much more. Happy hour on weekdays is from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. and has $2 beers, $4 wines and $5 "flocktails." The ‘Good JuJu’ caught our attention with Malibu Rum and southern peach tea sangria. This is for the southern and spirited drinker. There is also a Boozy Brunch every Saturday and Sunday where you can choose bottomless mimosas or sparkling rose. Grab some friends and enjoy the fun.

Espiritu Mezcaleria & Cocina (520 Capdeville St.) There is Latin flavor galore in this former Capdeville restaurant space in the CBD. Happy hour here is Monday – Friday from 3 p.m. – 6 p.m. The celebration here is full of drinks, history and the culture of Mexico. The focus here is on the mezcal and tequila. Espiritu, means “spirit” in Spanish and we think they nailed it. Owner, Jason Mitzen is a certified “Master Mezcalier."

Pearl Wine Co. (3700 Orleans Ave.) is offering sparking wine classes on Jan. 16, 23, and 30 at 7:30 p.m. It’s a three part course focusing on the production and geography of sparking wines. Here you will taste and explore three wines each night from all the best regions. It’ll cost your $25 per person and includes cheese, bread and small bites. What a fun way to explore different wines, right? On Jan. 15, they will test your knowledge of alcohol. Trivia is back at Pearl and Jake Kokemor is hosting. Bring your brain power and thirst to the party for Tuesday trivia at Pearl.

These are of course just a few options to start the new year off right. If you have a fun cocktail happy hour you want us to check out, let us know so we can share it with everyone.
