Comedy Festival by Women-Identifying Performers Comes to New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Four comedians and writers will bring women from around the country to New Orleans for the Lysistrata Comedy Festival, happening March 18 through 20, 2022. Hosted by three venues along St. Claude Avenue, the event will feature stand-up, improv, short film, burlesque, karaoke, and storytelling along with learning and networking opportunities.

“In the Greek comedy, Lysistrata, women gathered together and used unconventional means to stop war. Well, we posit that we can change anything for the better with a little female ingenuity,” said Denise Jena, one of the co-founders of the festival.

Jena along with co-producers Rochelle McConico, Candace Robertson, and Jess Scott all have experience putting on comedy and theatrical performances and decided to join forces to bring together nearly 40 performers from nine states to celebrate the power of women creatives.

“You might think that New Orleans is a city that doesn’t need more festivals, but it definitely needs this one,” said McConico. “We wanted to create something that supported more than just the big names, but instead celebrated women from all levels in their performing careers.”

The performers are just as diverse as their acts, coming from different backgrounds representing a variety of the female experience. The producers believe this is a “can’t miss” opportunity for anyone that needs a laugh. “The past two years of lockdown have made folks hungry for live entertainment, and there’s nothing better than lovely lady comics,” said Jess Scott. “You also get to hear from voices you don’t often get so you’ll have perspectives that are different and beautiful.”

Those interested in attending can purchase day passes for $30, a 3-day pass for $85, and individual show tickets that range from $10 to $20. The event’s learning opportunities like an improv workshop, career panel, and headshot hangout are free. Ticket information is available at: eventbrite.com/o/mooncricket-productions-33116070083
