Cool Drinks to Enjoy This Summer

We are now well into summer and, along with that, comes the undeniable, inescapable New Orleans heat. New Orleanians everywhere can identify with the sensation of walking inside, drenched in sweat, and welcoming that first burst of air conditioning. July 19 is National Daiquiri day, a day that should be celebrated biggest in the hot Big Easy. In honor of the national holiday, raise your Styrofoam cup, embrace the heat, and try out some of these cool cocktails at some New Orleans venues.

Freret Street Publiq House. Freret Street’s funky bar and music club housed in an old warehouse, offers a panoply of frozen specialties including the Mardi Gras Mambo, a take on the traditional bourbon fruit punch as well as several spicy, frozen margaritas and a popular white Russian. If you are in the mood for something sweeter, try the Jameson Coffee Orleans, complete with Irish whiskey.

Booty’s Street Food. The globetrotting Bywater bar and restaurant houses many hidden gems that are waiting to be discovered. By now, word has spread, and Booty’s is not such a well-kept secret. Try their Bywater Bomber, a refreshing twist on the daiquiri that seems to stay closest to the cocktail’s Caribbean origins. If you are feeling even more worldly, go for their featured daiquiri of the day.

MoPho. Mid City’s modern take on Vietnamese classics takes it one step further by boozing up the classic bubble tea. The eclectic restaurant’s menu boasts many culinary adventures but cool down with one of the Boozy Boba Teas that are made in-house and are complemented with the traditional fun colored bubble tea straw and tapioca balls at the bottom. The Stone + Spice blends peach, mango and passion fruit flavors, with a hint of ginger and topped off with rum and is refreshing while staying true to those with daring taste buds.

The Rusty Nail. The popular Warehouse District bar, great for watching the game or enjoying live music, also offers an infamous frozen vodka-lemonade, named a Disco Lemonade that is not too sweet but provides the perfect amount of relief on a hot summer’s day. Enjoy the frozen cocktail or the frozen Pimm’s cup on the expansive outdoor patio.

There is no limit to the amount of frozen options that can be found in the Big Easy. Go ahead and grab your favorite and maybe head down to the inaugural Daiquiri Day Parade on Saturday, July 19, which will start at Gene’s Po-Boys and Daiquris in the Bywater while celebrating the richness of the history of one of our city’s favorite cocktails.
