Touro Rehabilitation Center, which specializes in brain, spinal cord and stroke recovery, has been recognized nationally for its excellence in the field of rehabilitation for over 25 years. On October 22, supporters of the TRC assembled at the Sheraton Hotel on Canal for the Touro Here for Life Gala: “Where Hope Begins.”
Hosted by Chair Suzanne Dupuy Phelps and co-chairs Pamela John Dupuy and Gabriela Caputto Nagle, the event began with a patron party held in the Sheraton’s Rodrigue Room, complete with the sounds of Javier Olando and the Rebirth Brass Band, whose very own tuba player, Phil Frazier, suffered a stroke and tributes the TRC for his successful recovery. Patron partygoers were then led by Rebirth in a second-line to the ballroom for the gala. The party then ensued with a cocktail reception and seated gourmet dinner, entertainment by Deacon John and the Ivories, a raffle and silent auction and the presentation of the Judah Touro Society Award.
The Judah Touro award is the highest honor given annually to an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to the efforts of Touro Infirmary. This year’s recipient was businessman and entrepreneur Michael Berenson, who has served Touro for 20 years. Berenson has been a venerable member of the Touro Infirmary Foundation board along with several other governing board committees and serves as Touro’s governing board chairman.
Together, this year’s 500 attendees raised over $300,000 for Touro Rehabilitation Center.
