It is said that as early as the 1890’s, the term “preppy” emerged as a label for young adults privileged enough to attend preparatory and Ivy League schools. Over time, the term expanded to include the sartorial style choices of the group. Collared shirts and loafers worn during school hours and rowing jackets, boat shoes donned for extracurriculars became the aspirational wardrobe for all – a style symbolic of the American dream.
Today, “preppy” style maintains many of its staple items, but has also expanded to include the perspectives of a more diverse prep school population. Stalwart brands like Brooks Brothers and Perlis have evolved to offer chic new iterations of their classic styles. Newer brands like Greyson, Veronica Beard and Nola Couture push the boundaries even farther. So it seems, much like the American population itself, the once narrowly defined “preppy” style has a new, expansive point of view.
