Crescent City Auction Shines a Light on Folk Art

Folk art is generally considered to be the “art of the people.” Forget the erudite artist’s works hanging in museums of jewel adorned kings and bring on everyday people painted on driftwood.  Although folk artists never roamed the halls of the Royal College of Arts that doesn’t mean the passion and message behind their work is any less discernible. On the contrary, the work of folk artists often becomes the only true depiction of everyday life for a huge segment of the population. The late Louisiana based couple, Darryl Sue Morais White and Leonard Louis White, recognized this and over time amassed a tremendous collection of southern folk art. The two enjoyed their free time canvasing small southern art fairs for treasures to adorn their home. Many of us already know artists like, Clementine HunterLorraine Gendron and Simon but there are many more that deserve our recognition. In the upcoming Important Estates Auction on Nov. 8 and 9 at Crescent City Auction, you can peruse the works of artists like Willie White, Reginald Mitchell and Darrell Loy Scott. Some of my personal include “Watermelons,” by Willie White, “Interior in Red”, by Reginald Mitchell and “Presentation of the Angels,” by Darrell Loy Scott. Go check it out in person or online and maybe you can become a collector for the next generation.
