Dream Honeymoons: Roost Regally in these Rural Retreats

You’ve been locked down for eons, but you’re still not ready to venture to the other side of the world. Luckily, the expansive United States holds remote, romantic, coddling inns aplenty, the sort meant for sequestering in style with your life mate.

Keswick Hall, Charlottesville, Virginia

History loving honeymooners can combine their love of the past with their penchant for wine at Keswick Hall, a just renovated (to the tune of multimillions) haven, an hour from Washington D.C. Set in the heart of Virginia’s pastoral wine country, minutes from Jefferson’s Monticello and James Madison’s Montpelier, among other historic sites, this 400-acre estate holds a carpet of manicured gardens, red clay tennis courts, an infinity pool, a slew of undulating trails and its own winery. Reopening in August, the reimagined property, polished and enhanced, will proudly provide guests the opportunity to sup at the table of celebrity Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten, at his newly minted, signature restaurant, Marigold. Nearby, the university town of buzzy Charlottesville offers up its plethora of breweries, distilleries, boutiques and galleries with easy streets for wandering and perusing. Other activities the resort can arrange include horseback riding, fly fishing and wine tasting.

Room to Book: Indulge in the 1500-square-foot (indoor and outdoor space) Presidential Suite, which has a dream balcony for late morning coffee and Frette sheets for snuggling at all hours.

Beach Plum Farm, Cape May, New Jersey

They don’t call New Jersey the Garden State by chance. This fertile snippet of a coastal state grows some of the best produce in the world. For foodie fueled honeymooners, a stay Beach Plum, a 62-acre working farm, rules the day. Root into one of the five cozy cottages and barns, each part of the farm, surrounded by the scent of growing vegetables, earthy mulch and sea air. Each comes with a full cook’s kitchen, washers and dryers, screened-in porches, outdoor fire pits and outdoor showers. Use of golf carts and bicycles, plus pool access and beach service add to the fun. Located less than two miles from Cape May’s famed historic downtown, the farm offers earth-to-plate meals in The Kitchen, its popular eatery set in an Amish barn. Expect changing menus determined on what hailed from the fields that morning.

Room to Book: Choose the Whaler’s Cottage, which dates to 1780. It’s one of the oldest homes on Cape Island. Cuddle in front of the fireplace at night as you plan your next day’s activities.

Carneros Resort and Spa, Napa Valley, California

Before Napa seemed to be all about wine, it was a fertile agrarian community, with a climate that favored grapes, among other fruits and vegetables. In a nod to those farm-centric times, Carneros Resort and Spa has 100 free-standing cottages that pepper 28 acres in the heart of the vine-lands. Each luxurious stand-alone snug has 420 square feet of living space, and even larger outdoor gardens and yards. Like a village, the retreat has streets and pathways that lead to the pool, spa and famed on site restaurants — Boom Fly Cafe, FARM at Carneros and Hilltop Dining Room. Enjoy gorgeous soaking tubs (large enough for two), indoor-outdoor showers, fireplaces and bi-fold doors that frame the jaw dropping views. Base here to wine taste, take leisurely bike rides, hike, and explore Napa’s array of charming towns.

Room To Book: There are some two bedroom cottages and bigger homes on property, but honeymooners will prefer the luxuriously appointed, private cottages, which are plenty large enough for lovey-dovey couples who just want to hang out together.
