Dune: Part 2 in 70mm

At The Prytania Theater

Who would rather aux chord Spotify than see Beyonce live? Nobody.

Who would rather watch the Saints on TV than be seated in the Dome? Nobody I know.

Then why would anybody rather watch a movie on their iPad than see it on the big screen?

You deserve better than that. We all do.

Thankfully, New Orleans is home to several incredible independent theaters presenting cinema as it was meant to be seen: big, bold, and loud.

Recently, The Prytania Theater, our city’s crown jewel movie palace, became one of only 40 theaters in the United States with a 70mm film projector. First installed and utilized for Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” this past summer, the 70mm format, the most detailed and highest quality of its kind, allows films to be presented in their optimum form, as a living, breathing strip of celluloid that transports audiences out of-time and place itself.

For the next week, The Prytania Theater is showing Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune: Part Two” in glorious 70mm. Picking up moments after the events of “Dune: Part One,” this grand sequel takes over the story of Paul Atreides and his journey to liberate, at all costs, the desert planet of Arrakis. I have seen the film in 70mm and can confirm that it is a feast for the senses, a bombastic vision of sci-fi cinema, an audio-visual spectacle that is so rarely allowed to exist in the modern Hollywood studio system. The film is a sweeping tragedy of love, revolution, and religious zealotry that shares more than just its sandy location with “Lawrence of Arabia” or “The Ten Commandments.” It is a modern-day epic and deserves to be witnessed as such.

If there was ever a film built to be seen on the big screen in the most transformative film format available, it is “Dune: Part Two.” And if there was ever a time for you to return to the theater, it is today.

So join us in the dark with the flickering screen, where the movies live forever, and the popcorn is always better.

You’ll be glad you did.
