It’s August in New Orleans, when afternoons stretch a little longer, vacations are winding down, and everyone is looking for the nearest A/C or patch of shade. But beneath that slower pace, there’s excitement building. The stages are preparing to raise their curtains, galleries are hanging new exhibitions, and before we know it, our calendars will be full again. That’s one of the reasons I love this time of year; it gives us a chance to catch our breath before the city does what it does best.
In this issue, we’re helping you get a head start on the cultural season with a guide to the performances, concerts, exhibitions and events that deserve a place on your calendar. Whether you’re a devoted theatergoer, an art lover or someone simply looking for a reason to spend an evening downtown, there’s so much to look forward to.
Of course, August also happens to be one of the best-kept secrets for enjoying the city. With fewer crowds and plenty of seasonal offers, it’s the perfect excuse to book that hotel you’ve always wanted to check out, finally schedule a spa day, or linger over dinner somewhere you’ve been meaning to try. Our staycations feature is filled with local escapes that remind us you don’t have to travel far to feel like you’ve truly gotten away.
One of my favorite things about putting together each issue is discovering new reasons to appreciate this city we all love and having the opportunity to tell the stories of the people and places that make our home unlike anywhere else. Even during the quiet days of summer, New Orleans never really stands still. There’s always another another hidden gem to discover and another excuse to gather around a table with friends and family.
I hope these pages inspire you to enjoy every bit of what’s left of summer while looking forward to all that’s ahead. As always, thank you for reading and supporting our local businesses and creatives.
Enjoy the issue.
