Editor’s Note: October Magic

It’s hard to pick a favorite month in New Orleans, but October is right at the top of my list. The air finally starts to feel less like a thick, hot blanket of water, everyone is settling back into their post-summer routines, festivals and events are in high gear and, of course, we do Halloween like no other.

This month, we are especially honored to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the Historic New Orleans Collection on our cover. For six decades, HNOC has played an invaluable role in preserving our city’s history while making it accessible through education and engagement. This year, my daughter’s seventh-grade history class is partnering with HNOC, and I could not be more thrilled to see a new generation experience our past in such a meaningful way. We also turn to HNOC frequently as a resource, including for our beloved Nostalgia column, which appears in every issue. Cheers to 60 years!

In her wellness feature, Molly Kimball explores the seven types of rest, from sensory to spiritual, and why simply getting physical rest may not be enough. It’s a timely reminder to pay attention to what kind of restoration we truly need.

We’re also embracing color and brilliant design. Our feature on designer Nomita Joshi-Gupta’s stunning project is filled with vibrant hues and bold choices—a welcome departure from the sea of beige we’ve been swimming in for far too long.

As always, our Arts Calendar and Around Town columns spotlight the unique and exceptional events happening throughout the city, while our What’s Hot, Fashion and Eat + Drink pages embrace the moody spirit of Halloween and fall.

Here’s to honoring our past, celebrating our present and finding plenty of inspiration along the way.

Happy October!
