100 Years of art
An integral part of New Orleans culture – and a key tourist attraction – the New Orleans Museum of Art celebrates its centennial anniversary this year.

On Jan. 8 a kickoff celebration will start the year long party with free activities that honor its growth, and thank the patrons and community members who have given service and support over the years.

NOMA today has more than 35,00 unique pieces in its permanent collection, many of which have been contributed by various donors and patrons throughout its history.

This month, the museum will host “Great Collectors/Great Donors: The Making of the New Orleans Museum of Art, 1910-2010,” which highlights the exceptional objets d’art, paintings, drawings, sculptures and other creations that have made the museum into a New Orleans treasure trove. The exhibit will be on display through Jan. 23. The museum itself is open five days a week, Wednesday, noon to 8 p.m.; and Thursday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Party cups with a message

The concept of a “go-cup” might be an unfamiliar one to someone living outside New Orleans, but it’s a staple of life here and, as Carnival season heats up, you’ll see them almost everywhere you go.

One of the biggest suppliers of these cups is the Giacona Container Corporation, which began in 1923 as Giacona Can Company. Since its inception, it has evolved to include the Party Cup Express division, which produces souvenir cups, glassware and other party supplies. Gina Lynch, who serves as vice president and chief operating officer, is the original founder’s granddaughter. Lynch says that her company supplies most local Mardi Gras krewes with their signature throw-cups, and she adds that Party Cup Express sell “lots of other fun gifts” and custom orders for parties, weddings and other celebrations. “We’ve been doing large orders of custom drinkware for a very long time,” she says, “So we decided to come up with some new locally inspired ideas.” Streetcars, Saints logos and other New Orleans emblems are available, as are any official NFL logos. In addition, the company employs local artists with “unique products,” says Lynch, including hand-painted glasses and jeweled cheese plates.

It also offers custom beer cozies, light-up glassware and napkins. Party Cup Express makes biodegradable products as well. Lynch adds that everything is printed on-site and the company welcomes orders of all quantities.
