Families across the community and state look to Children’s Hospital New Orleans as the health experts for kids in Louisiana. For more than 60 years, Children’s has delivered expert pediatric healthcare as the first and largest free-standing children’s hospital in Louisiana. Today, the hospital provides unmatched pediatric expertise with a vision to change the face of healthcare for all children.

“Our obligation is to the children and families dealing with everything from the most complex medical issues to the everyday health and wellness of children and adolescents,” says John R. Nickens, IV, President and CEO. Through the unprecedented, $300M transformation of its Uptown campus, rapidly expanding specialty clinics across the state, and a robust virtual care program, Children’s Hospital is not only improving infrastructure and technology, but it’s also making it easier for patients and families across the region to access vital services.

“Shaping a better tomorrow for kids also means creating environments of health within our communities,” says Nickens. “In 2020, amidst the unrest of the pandemic, we saw an opportunity to better serve school communities and successfully launched ThriveKids, The Student Wellness Project. This initiative allows Children’s to work collaboratively with schools across Louisiana to advance the health and wellbeing of students by offering school-based virtual care, school nurse support, mental and behavioral health services, and more.”

Another great stride Children’s made in 2020 was the rapid expansion of virtual care. At a time when parents were wary of bringing children to the hospital and doctor’s offices, Children’s providers and operational team stepped up to the plate to grow what was already a strong virtual care program into an extraordinary resource for families and a continuum of care during uncertain times.

Local families may be surprised to learn that Children’s Hospital is proud to house two academic pediatric medical programs under one roof. With both Tulane University School of Medicine and LSU Health New Orleans pediatric programs in its hospital, Children’s offers an unparalleled opportunity for educational enhancement for the next generation of doctors, and innovative healthcare for all kids.

John Nickens came to New Orleans in September 2017 to fill the role of President and CEO of Children’s Hospital after serving as Executive Vice President of Texas Children’s and in various administrative roles with Baylor College of Medicine.
