The St. Margaret’s Family stands at the intersection of new-age technologies and traditional values when it comes to elder care.
Year after year, retirement-age individuals in the Greater New Orleans community become part of an ever more vulnerable demographic. The St. Margaret’s Family’s goal as stewards is to treat their residents as elders were treated in bygone eras: as communal treasures, as storytellers, as guardians and purveyors of the deep wisdom that only time can bestow. In their ninety-three years, St. Margaret’s has found that modern techniques and technologies must be brought to bear alongside a keen appreciation for the humanity and dignity of the people they serve.
The household model featured on their Mercy campus is perhaps their proudest accomplishment. By foregoing clinical hallways and industrial lighting in favor of “neighborhoods” – private and semi-private apartments gathered around living rooms and open-concept kitchens on each floor – they can provide top notch care in an environment that reminds residents that they remain a critical, central participant in the vibrant community they helped to build in their younger years.
