As the only lifespan hemophilia treatment center in the state, the Louisiana Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders (LCBCD), based at Tulane University, has served the region through innovative therapies and research since 1980. Dr. Maissaa Janbain has devoted her career to bringing cutting-edge treatments to her patients, and now serves as the Center’s director, a role she assumed from former director and mentor, Dr. Cindy Leissinger.
“In the past, hemophilia patients required regular intravenous infusions of clotting factors to prevent serious bleeding, but the high treatment burden impacted their quality of life,” explains Dr. Janbain. “Now with newer treatments like gene therapy, our patients can lead nearly normal lives”.
Most importantly, patients can rely on the team at the LCBCD. Home and school visits ensure all patients have access to optimal care, and outreach clinics provide services to patients who live in distant communities. The LCBCD is also expanding care for women, whose bleeding problems have historically been overlooked. With the opening of a women’s clinic, specialists like Dr. Janbain are better serving the entire population of patients and charting a new future for those suffering from chronic bleeding disorders.
