NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Felipe’s Taqueria and owner Pike Howard announced that, thanks to support of the community, $102,780 has been raised to benefit Shuck Cancer, an American Cancer Society initiative. These funds directly support the Access to Care Grant Program, which provides essential transportation and lodging for cancer patients throughout Louisiana, making crucial treatments more accessible for those in need.
Founded by young professionals in New Orleans, alongside local restaurateur John Michael Rowland (Superior Seafood & Oyster Bar), Shuck Cancer has become widely locally known as “the best party with a purpose.” Since its inception in 2018, Shuck Cancer has raised over $1 million to support Louisiana’s cancer patients and has grown into one of the city’s most anticipated annual charity events.
This year, Felipe’s community support saw 12,778 guests contributed over $5,700. Felipe’s matched this generosity dollar for dollar, raising nearly $11,500 for the cause. Owner Pike Howard noted in a press release his honor to be recognized as the Top Shucker. This contribution also set records, both for a young professional with the American Cancer Society nationwide and for Shuck Cancer itself.
“We are proud to support Shuck Cancer and to see our community come together to fight against a disease that is close to all of us,” said Howard. “At Felipe’s, we know how to throw a great party, and our mission aligns perfectly with Shuck Cancer’s focus on community, resilience, and support. Together, we’re creating opportunities for healing, hope, and equal access to care for cancer patients in Louisiana. It’s a testament to what we can accomplish when we rally behind each other.”
Funds for Shuck Cancer were raised through a two-month round-up campaign at Felipe’s, culminating at the Shuck Cancer event on Thursday, November 21. The annual Shuck Cancer event, hosted by American Cancer Society’s Junior Executive Board, united those from across the community to celebrate while enjoying oysters from coast to coast, wine pairings and spirits, and other cuisine from 30+ local restaurants, live music and a silent auction.
