French Quarter Management District Provides Free Glass Recycling on National Recycling Day

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Friday, Nov. 15, is National Recycling Day. The French Quarter Management District (FQMD) reminds New Orleanians that glass recycling is free to all New Orleans area residents at three French Quarter drop off locations. Since glass is not part of the City of New Orleans’ recycling program, residents who wish to recycle glass must pay a private company to do so.

The French Quarter Management District works everyday to make the French Quarter a better place to live, work and visit. To date, the FQMD drop-off recycling program has collected over 8,000 lbs of glass recycled, about 100 cubic yds of cardboard collected, and about 85 cubic yards of plastic. Earlier this year,  FQMD partnered with seven French Quarter hotels to collect 3,346 pounds of Mardi Gras beads to recycle during carnival season.

Glass and other recyclables can be dropped off year-round at the following French Quarter locations:

  • Every TUESDAY
    • New Orleans Jazz Museum (400 Esplanade Ave.)
    • 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Every THURSDAY
    • Cabrini Park (1219 Dauphine St.)
    • 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
  • Every SUNDAY
    • The Historic New Orleans Collection (616 Toulouse St.)
    • 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The FQMD has contracted with Glass Half Full to recycle glass “waste” into sand and gravel for disaster relief, coastal restoration and eco construction. Each French Quarter site will accept glass, aluminum, paper/cardboard, and plastics #1 and #2. A Glass Half Full staff member will be on site during the duration of each drop-off to help attendees sort their recyclable and answer questions.
