Friends of the University of New Orleans Library to Host Panel Discussion on Censorship in Louisiana’s Libraries

NEW ORLEANS (press release) – On Wednesday, May 3, the Friends of the University of New Orleans Library will host a panel discussion focusing on recently proposed legislation in Louisiana regarding restrictions on access to public library collections.  Participating in the panel will be Dr. Jennifer Thiele, LSU School of Library and Information Science, A’Niya Robinson, Advocacy Strategist for the Louisiana ACLU, and Dr. Patricia Austin, UNO Professor of Children’s Literature and Curator of the UNO Children’s Library.  The discussion will be moderated by Roby Chavez, Communities Correspondent for the PBS NewsHour out of New Orleans.

This event is open to the public and will include a moderated Q&A session between the audience and panelists.  The subject of the panel discussion should be of interest to any citizen concerned with government censorship, free speech and exchange of ideas, parents’ rights, protections for the LGBTQIA+ community, and libraries as political spaces.

The discussion will be held on UNO’s campus, at 2000 Lakeshore Drive, in room 407 of Earl K. Long Library beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The Friends of the UNO Library, founded in 1977, is a non-profit, volunteer organization that raises funds to support the mission of the Earl K. Long Library.  Anyone interested in becoming a Friend can find more information at https://libguides.uno.edu/friends/friends
