NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Girls on the Run of New Orleans will host its first 5k since the start of the Covid-19 Pandemic on May 21 at Joe Brown Park. The 5k event is presented by the Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust. The Oscar J. Tolmas Charitable Trust became a sponsor in the Fall of 2018 and is committed to supporting Girls on the Run of New Orleans.
Girls on the Run New Orleans is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that uses fun running games and dynamic discussions to teach life skills to girls in 3rd to 8th grade. During the ten-week program, girls participate in lessons that foster confidence, build peer connections and encourage community service while they prepare for an end-of-season celebratory 5K event.
Participation in the 5K event on May 21st is open to the public and all proceeds from the event will benefit Girls on the Run of New Orleans. Community members will run through Joe Brown Park for 3.1 miles, prior to the race participants will Second Line to the starting line with Grammy nominated band The Hot 8 and the legendary Mardi Gras Indians. Our last 5k in Fall of 2019 brought together 1,000 participants including program participants, their family and friends and community members. Registration cost is $35 and includes an event shirt and medal, post-race food & drink, and a dance party!
The 5k event will begin at 8:00 AM on May 21st at Joe Brown Park and early arrival is suggested to enjoy our Inspiration Village which opens at 7:00 AM. For more information about the event, how to register and volunteer opportunities, visit www.gotrnola.org/5k.
