Is gratitude always best expressed with a gift? No, but sometimes it just feels right! A few days ago, my family attended a small New Year’s Eve party at a friend’s home. With all the craziness of the week (plus I’m absent minded) we forgot to bring the requisite gesture of a bottle of wine and/or champagne. The party was a huge success, providing the perfect blend of old friends, pre-school level fireworks and decadent desserts. We left the festivities feeling high on 2024 but low and guilty that we showed up empty handed.

The next day, I couldn’t shake the feeling of overwhelming gratitude but also embarrassment for my social oversight. Something needed to be done. But what? In the new year, most of us are trying to purge unwanted gifts, not acquire more. I put on my thinking cap and came up with several things that (hopefully) your host will be happy, not burdened, to receive. They would need to be useful and inspiring. In the end, I know my host would have been just as content to receive a handwritten note, but I just couldn’t help myself!
