As I scale the rickety old stairs up to our attic, I nervously look down at my children below and think, is this safe? The kids could care less, eagerly awaiting life-size skeletons, hairy spiders and all things Halloween that have been hibernating there since last November. Sharp dust flecks fire at my face from all angles, the floorboards precariously creak underneath my feet and there’s roach poop sprinkled on everything, but it’s too late to turn back now. I have no choice but to complete this risky retrieval, so I stay the course. When I finally get back down safely with the goods, I wonder, was it worth the dust mite bites and potential broken limbs? Then, the sound of our favorite decoration, a bloody, mechanical zombie spontaneously cries “Oooooooh ooooh” and we all giggle and know that it was.
Joking aside, spooky season can rival the holiday season in terms of effort! You’ll spend hours selecting a costume for yourself and children (and sometimes husband), decorating your home inside and out, stocking goodies for trick or treaters, attending Halloween parades and girls’ luncheons and of course stopping by a pumpkin patch. It’s a LOT. I’m exhausted just writing this. But one thing you can do to minimize your efforts is to invest in a few pretty Halloween décor items to use year after year. Decorations that put a smile on YOUR face (regardless of what the kids think). A little something pretty with a hint of spooky. Yes, you will still have to retrieve them from the attic in another “Mission Impossible” style choreographed climb, but hey you’re a pro by now.
