The Junior League of Greater Covington celebrated its 15th annual “Harvest Cup Polo Classic” match on October 30 at Leah Farm of Louisiana in Folsom. The beautiful day offered a delightful lineup of entertainment for guests, combining food, auctions and the thrill of a good sports game all into one extravaganza.
A Parade of Breeds featuring 12 different breeds of horses, including Clydesdales, Stallions and Egyptian Arabians, opened the classic, which consisted of two polo matches on the lush acreage. But horses weren’t the only ones who got to put on a show. Ladies present had the opportunity to showcase their keen senses of fashion and poise in the Pretty Woman Hat Contest, where winners received a celebratory sash in addition to earning the honor of presenting the winning polo team with its trophy.
The exhibition of glamorous hats and horses was just a fraction of the sights to be seen at the event. Chef John Besh presented his new cookbook to attendees, and fans had the opportunity to meet Besh and obtain autographs.
Throughout the day, guests relished flavorful culinary samples from over 35 restaurants, including tastes from Besh’s own La Provence, while listening to New Orleans-based band Cowboy Mouth, which broke away from the national music scene to provide entertainment at the event. Other thrills included the Polo match itself and, for those in the VIP tent, a live broadcast of the Saints game.
The annual classic is one of the major fundraisers for the JLGC, an organization that promotes volunteerism throughout the community. Proceeds raised benefit community projects including Project Prom, Career Corner, Girls’ Health Day, Children’s Museum of St. Tammany and more.
