• On May 7, Touro Infirmary will offer “My Aging Brain: Prime Years Seminar.” This free seminar will examine decline in memory and mental quickness in relation to age. Touro speech-language pathologist Chelsea Temple will discuss the anatomy of the brain, normal aging, how it changes and things to do – and not do – to stay mentally sharp with age.
The seminar takes place from noon to 1 p.m. in the Foucher Room. Registration is required by calling 897-8500 or visiting Touro.com.
• Lauren Cole, a public health graduate student at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center, and Edward Peters, Associate Professor of Public Health and Director of the Epidemiology Program at LSUHSC New Orleans, report that the incidence of head and neck cancer has risen with the greatest increase among middle-aged white men. Alcohol and tobacco are the most common risk factors for cancers of the head and neck, but Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is fast-becoming an important risk factor. The researchers also examined the variation in cancer rates by age, race/ethnicity, sex and cancer location. Findings were published last month in PLoS One journal.
• On May 14, East Jefferson General Hospital Foundation will host its 2012 Annual Golf Classic at the Chateau Golf and Country Club in Kenner. The proceeds from the classic will primarily be designated to help fund the building of an expanded and modernized Outpatient Oncology Infusion Center. In addition to a round of golf, participants will be able to enjoy good, awards and a live auction.
