Time traveling in the French Quarter? For guests who went to Historic BK House & Gardens’ Dining Through Time (with the tagline: “What if a dinner party could take you back in time?), the flavors of five different time periods in New Orleans history were served through this historic house.
Held May 18, Ralph Brennan Catering & Events created the dishes and Blue Book Barkeeps kept the cocktails on theme:
• Pre-Colonial New Orleans: Bulbancha – Three Sisters salad with Madeira spritz
• Creole New Orleans – rice station offering red beans, shrimp Creole and crawfish étouffée
• Piccolo Palermo – mini-muffulettas with a brandy Crusta
The Roaring Twenties: BK House Saved! – Gulf fish and beef daube with a Mary Pickford cocktail
Literary Legacy: Celebrating Frances Parkinson Keyes’ Legacy (Mid-20th century) – Lemon ice box tarts with a champagne cocktail
The event was held to mark a milestone and a future one: In 1925, the house was nearly demolished, but a group of six women and Gen. Allison Owen saved it. In 2026, the house will mark its 200th anniversary with a variety of programming and festivities.
Fun Fact: Music, of course, was a mood and Caleb Nelson & His Jazz Trio made the evening timeless.
