The 11th annual “Hope Gala,” an elegant evening to support the fight against cancer, was held August 20 at The Shops at Canal Place. During the gala the American Cancer Society honored 12 community members with Spirit Awards, acknowledgments of their individual contributions. Led by chairperson Melissa Pennebaker, the evening featured delicious cuisine, a live and silent auction, live entertainment and a Champagne and Diamonds raffle. Contestants from Bravo TV’s “Top Chef” series donated their time and culinary specialties for more than 600 patrons. Popular local venues such as Ste. Marie, The Grill Room, Muriel’s and Bayona contributed fare as well. Local rhythm and blues band The Bucktown All-Stars provided musical enjoyment for guests. Tickets and refreshments from Canal Place Theater, a tailored Brooks Brothers suit and two pearl necklaces were just some of the items up for bid during the live auction. Ochsner Health System was this year’s Diamond Sponsor of the gala that benefits ACS’ mission to help people get well, stay well, feel better and find cures for cancer.
