I scream, you scream

Enjoy a scoop or two for National Ice Cream Month.

Ice cream is everyone’s favorite comfort food, but it’s particularly, or at least stereotypically, beloved by children, pregnant women and the lovelorn. Flavors cover a range of tastes, from lurid pink bubblegum to sublime rosewater-mint, and although it’s popular year-round (I’m especially fond of pumpkin pie ice cream at Thanksgiving and peppermint stick or eggnog ice cream at Christmas), it’s the perfect treat on hot summer evenings.

Ice cream is not a calorie-conscious choice, I’ll admit, but this is the town that invented the french fry poor boy, so calories obviously aren’t our No. 1 concern. Furthermore, ice cream is loaded with calcium. (And yes, so is broccoli, but it’s not as much fun to eat broccoli on a peaceful twilight walk, nor is broccoli the cornerstone of millions of happy childhood memories.)

Whether you grab a scoop of gelato at Brocato’s, pick up a pint of Ben & Jerry’s at the grocery store or get ambitious and make your own, don’t deny yourself the simple pleasure of good ice cream, at least not until it cools off a little bit. Right now, in this heat, we need comfort food more than ever.
