Inspiration from Taylor Swift’s Best-Dressed Wedding Guest Looks

In case you have been living under a rock, Taylor Swift married Travis Kelce a few days ago. Though I’m not a Swiftie, I am a fan. I can sing along to her Top 10 hits with the best of them, each one conjuring a bittersweet haze of youthful contemplation. But hear me out on this, I am disappointed. Relax Swifties, this post will not criticize Taylor or her new husband or her wedding (choice of Madison Square Garden as a wedding venue notwithstanding). My gripe is strictly with the guests; specifically, their collective lack of fashion.  

For an event of this magnitude, the outfits – at least those seen on Instagram posts and paparazzi shots – left me shockingly disappointed for Tay Tay. After all, this wasn’t just the wedding weekend of America’s sweetheart; it also coincided with America’s 250th birthday. The occasion deserved a sense of reverence and a little spectacle. Instead, there were few, if any, true fashion moments. What could have been a parade of bright, romantic, summer power looks turned out to be surprisingly low-key and predictable with more than a hint of ’90s prom. 

First, let’s call out a few highlights. The adorable singer Kimberly Schlapman wore a fun blue ruffled frock by Sau Lee with glam silver shell choker. Karlie Kloss also shined in a gold silk dress by Tove paired with a striking red lipstick. Gigi Hadid donned a simple silhouette but scored extra points for the vibrant pink color.  Another nod goes to Elizabeth Banks, who wore a Persian blue halter dress by Versace with a sexy slicked back bob. While none of these looks were groundbreaking, the overall results were solid.  

But as for the rest of the guests seen walking in, well there’s a whole lot of blah and black. Some of the most disappointing offenders of the group were Kesha, Cindy Crawford and model daughter Kaia Gerber, as well as Brad Pitt’s girlfriend Ines de Ramon, Erin Andrews was not surprisingly in a classic look but  Jennifer Lopez wore all black. I expect more from you JLo. Even country singers like Miranda Lambert and Maren Morris didn’t hit the mark. Most shockingly of all, saccharine pastel queen Sabrina Carpenter only offered us a single pink flower on her otherwise black lace dress.  

I am earnestly trying to make sense of it. Sure, it was black tie but so are the Oscars. The more I ponder the possibilities, the more perplexed I am. Perhaps, guests were exhibiting extreme deference; setting the literal and figurative stage for ONLY her star to shine? Or maybe it was a directive from the bride; tell everyone to arrive in something plain but then change into something fabulous once inside? But what I think actually happened is that fashion is taking a turn for the mundane. Not for a lack of creativity but rather a collective feeling of overstimulation. In this era of constant consumption, social media targeted ads, Tik Tok shops, perhaps even celebrities are looking to take it down a notch?
