It’s Like Rain on Your Wedding Day

The idea of rain on your wedding day can mean different things to different people. When your wedding is being held in a place known for ideal weather, it can be disheartening to have an planned outdoor event moved inside. But in some hotter locations – New Orleans, we’re looking at you – occasionally rain can bring a bout of cooler weather.

According to wedding superstition, if it rains on your Big Day that is a sign of good luck.

This came up during a New Orleans Bride brainstorm session and we all wondered about the origin of rainy wedding days meaning good luck.

Kelly here: I really thought, when beginning this blog research, that I would have numerous references to this superstition as it is so commonly used and said still today. But this was not the case.

One thing we could find, even with a mention on WeddingWire.com India, was that the Hindu religion has the majority claim to the idea and superstition’s inception. But even with this citation, there were very few sources covering the topic, its origins and meaning.

Wedding Wire stated that in India especially, rain is said to be a blessing of wealth and fertility. Others have mentioned it as a sign of a fresh start for a couple, literally washing away the past as they enter their new life as newlyweds.

The Knot briefly mentioned the Hindu connection to rain in an article earlier this year about how to prepare your wedding for the chance of storms and what to do if it happens. Though, The Knot, as well as other less reputable sources, claimed our favorite idea behind the concept of good luck.

There is the popular saying that a couple “ties the knot” when they get married. With this  in mind, the thought is that a wet knot is harder to untie. Thus, if it rains on your wedding day, it is a sign of a lasting marriage as it would be harder to untie – or undo – the union from a knot made in a wet rope.

We wish there would have been more on the origins or some big, grand symbol of romance or tradition, but there is something to be said about simplicity.

A wet knot is harder to untie, so welcome the rain when you tie yours.
