The Grant Center s proud to announce the lecture titled, “Jews in the United States and the Response to the Holocaust, 1942-45.” This event aims to shed light on the range of responses from the American Jewish community during World War II, as they grappled with the devastating news of the mass murder of European Jews.
Taking place Thursday, Nov. 9, at 6:30 p.m., the lecture will be held at the Rogers Memorial Chapel located on the Tulane University campus. Historian Jason Dawsey will be the distinguished speaker, providing invaluable insights into this crucial period of history.
As reports of the genocide reached Jews in the United States in 1942, they were faced with the daunting task of comprehending the magnitude of the atrocities. Despite the limited and fragmented information available, American Jews and Jewish refugees who had recently arrived in the US mobilized themselves to draw attention to the ongoing genocide. They demanded military action against the Nazis to halt the killing and called for collective efforts to aid survivors.
This lecture will delve into the various responses from the American Jewish community during this dark chapter of history. Jason Dawsey, a respected historian with extensive knowledge in this field, will provide a comprehensive analysis of the actions taken by American Jews and the challenges they faced in their efforts to address the Holocaust.
The event promises to be an engaging and educational experience for attendees, offering a deeper understanding of the American Jewish community’s response to the Holocaust. It serves as a reminder of the importance of collective action, remembrance, and the ongoing fight against injustice.
We invite students, faculty, historians, and the general public to join on Nov. 9. This lecture is open to all, and admission is free.
