Happy birthday Jefferson Parish! Founded on Feb. 11, 1825 in honor of President Thomas Jefferson, a year before he died, the parish encompassed a bigger footprint then than now, finally establishing its present borders with Orleans Parish in 1874.
To commemorate the parish’s start, the Jefferson Parish Bicentennial Ball was held on June 14 at Lakeside Shopping Center (which opened in 1960).
The entertainment was truly a once-in-a-lifetime: Emmy and Tony award-winner Kristin Chenoweth, who performed with an orchestra organized by Jefferson Performing Arts Society’s Dennis Assaf; Irma Thomas; Sister Sledge; Deacon John; The Victory Belles; The Yat Pack; NOLA Vox, Tom Hook and Rachel Fleetwood.
Food was provided by more than 50 restaurants, and there were two martini bars among the libation stations, an Orange Julius station and exhibits showcasing the history of the parish.
The ball was presented by the New Orleans Saints, New Orleans Pelicans, Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, Feil Organization, Lakeside Shopping Center and Entergy Corporation.
“The Bicentennial Ball transformed Lakeside Shopping Center into a stunning ballroom that honored both the history and the present of Jefferson Parish. Thoughtfully curated decor, live music, and more than 50 food stations showcased the rich cultural diversity that defines our parish,” said event Chair Lynda Nugent Smith.
Proceeds from the benefit will go to the Jefferson Community Foundation to strengthen educational opportunities across the parish.
Fun Fact: The ball was enhanced with a variety of experiences that made the evening memorable: trees decorated with photos representing each municipality, minigolf and arcade games, a pop-up sports lounge to view the College World Series, and the Lee Michaels Fine Jewelry photo wall where guests could try on $1 million worth of jewelry.
