What’s your favorite thing about working at Southern Candymakers? I love working with the Tompkins family, who own the business, and all the staff including my manager, MJ Robitaille. It’s also great selling a product to be proud of.
Can you eat as much candy as you like? Yes, we can, and with the wonderful aroma in the store it’s impossible to resist.
What are your most popular candies? Our pralines are the best in New Orleans and they’re our No. 1 seller. Our Tortues (or turtles) are a close second and our Almond Toffee just won Best Candy at the WYES Chocolate Affair.
Is there anything unique about your candies? Everything is made with fresh ingredients from scratch in our French Quarter kitchen. We use no preservatives, and you can taste the difference.
Do you have any celebrity customers? Yes, they love the fact our candy is handmade in the traditional way. Khandi Alexander from “Treme” is a great customer, as is Harry Connick Jr., Tom Benson and Steven Tyler love our pralines!
Tell us something we don’t know about the business? We have over 1,000 molds, so we can make almost any shape of candy a client wants.
Do you create a lot of custom orders? Yes. A lot. We also offer mini versions of all our candies and we can ship anywhere in the USA.
