National Breast Reconstruction Awareness (BRA) Day spokesperson Jewel performed a poignant double-header concert on Monday, October 29, at the New Orleans Convention Center. The performance was in conjunction with the Plastic Surgery “THE Meeting,” a conference sponsored by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
The first concert was an intimate affair in the Convention Center’s La Nouvelle Ballroom, coupled with a dinner menu designed by James Beard Award-winning Chef Donald Link and Chef Chris Wilson, Culinary Director for Emeril’s New Orleans Restaurants and Emeril Lagasse Foundation.
Jewel followed up this personal performance with a benefit concert in the New Orleans Theater.
The anthem of the night was Jewel’s self-penned ballad, “Flower,” which she wrote as an ode to breast cancer survivors. Simply dressed and alone on the stage but for the accompaniment of her guitar, her moving words – “She’s a flower that grows despite cement holes. And she will survive, she will survive” – inspired the packed room to a standing ovation.
All event proceeds were donated to The Breast Reconstruction Awareness Fund of The Plastic Surgery Foundation and used to support PSF research and breast reconstructionist organizations, including the Breastoration program of the Cancer Association of Greater New Orleans. F
