The spirit of the Mississippi River set the stage for Jewish Family Service of Greater New Orleans’ annual Rollin’ on the River gala, held March 12 at The Misi.
Inspired by the classic musical “Show Boat!,” the venue was transformed into a riverboat setting with décor and sweeping views of the Mississippi River.
The highlight of the evening was the recognition of Debbie and Leon Pesses, who were honored for their decades of leadership, generosity and unwavering commitment to strengthening Jewish life and advancing the values of tikkun olam — the Jewish principle of repairing and bettering the world.
The tribute was presented by JFS CEO Roselle Ungar, who reflected on the couple’s extraordinary service and the difference they have made through their steadfast support of the organization’s mission.
Beyond honoring two community leaders, the gala raised support for Jewish Family Service’s essential programs that provide hope and stability to those in need. These services include care management for older adults and individuals with disabilities, affordable counseling, and a Financial Resource Center that assists families facing economic challenges.
Event co-chairs were Sam Cohen, Barbara Kaplinsky and Marilynn Galler Wohlstadter.
Fun Fact: Keeping in theme, table centerpieces were crafted by Ann Streiffer and Samantha Jaffe Tanenbaum of driftwood found along the Mississippi Rover and adorned with Spanish moss, air plants and other succulents, and faux candles.
