More than 650 local business and civic leaders gathered at the Hilton New Orleans Riverside Hotel on October 27 for the New Orleans Police and Justice Foundation’s “Stake Out for Justice” luncheon. The event honored several community activists, including Richard Adkerson (on behalf of Freeport McMoran Foundation) and Dr. Byron Harrell (on behalf of Baptist Community Ministries) with the Corporate Responsibility Award and Gloria Kabacoff, who received a standing ovation, with the Chief’s Award.
The event featured keynote speaker David Simon, creator of HBO’s “Treme” and “The Wire,” who listed five steps that would help the New Orleans criminal justice system, including eliminating the practice of receiving payment for jail nights and demanding that all investigators in the department maintain a minimum number of confidential informants.
The mission of the NOPJF is “to impact safety and justice in New Orleans and facilitate improvements and reforms throughout the criminal justice system. Our overarching goal is to make New Orleans a safer place to live, to work and to visit.”
