One of the nice things about living in New Orleans is that there isn’t really a post-holiday letdown. We move seamlessly from Thanksgiving to Christmas to New Year’s to Twelfth Night to Mardi Gras to Easter. It’s hard to be sad about packing up the Christmas ornaments when there’s King Cake to be eaten! King Cake season, of course, begins on Jan. 6, which is said to be the day that the Three Wise Men finally reached the Christ child and presented their gifts to him. I suppose we could have ended up commemorating this occasion with frankincense and myrrh instead of cake, but as those cannot be filled with cream cheese, I have to say I’m glad this is the legacy that stuck. Happy Carnival, everyone!
