NEW ORLEANS (press release) – Come to the Krewe of Dolly kick-off event at Alvar Library (a New Orleans Public Library) on May 4 to make Dolly crafts and sign up your child for free books if you live in zip code 70117 in Orleans Parish.
On Jan. 19, The Krewe of Dolly hosted Dolly’s Birthday Bash, raising thousands of dollars. The Louisiana Legislature has committed to match these funds. This allows the Krewe of Dolly to start the Imagination Library here in the City of New Orleans starting with zip code 70117. Any child birth to 5 years old is eligible to receive a free, age-appropriate book every month until their 5th birthday.
Attendees can expect to see around 20 different Krewe of Dolly members in costume. There will be a craft table where kids can participate in Dolly-themed projects. Krewe of Dolly members will hand out postcards with a QR code to scan, so parents can sign their child up for Imagination Library or to be notified when their zip code is added. Kids can also participate in the library’s Little Laboratories program.
As a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, the Krewe of Dolly seeks to improve children’s literacy by bringing the Imagination Library to New Orleans. The Imagination Library is Dolly’s nonprofit to promote literacy by sending books to children from birth to age 5. Her foundation partners with local nonprofits to build and maintain a database of the addresses of every child in the zip code. The local partner raises the funds to ship the books and the Imagination Library sources and ships the books at very low cost. Now that zip code 70117 will launch, our goal is to engage community partners to bring Imagination Library to every zip code in Orleans Parish. Bill HB 412 passed in the Louisiana legislature this year that will provide a 50% funding match with partners of the Imagination Library. This will allow us to stretch our funding twice as far!
