Growing up on the lakefront, Pontchartrain Conservancy’s Executive Director Kristi Trail was fascinated with the New Canal Lighthouse, which served as a Coast Guard station at the time. Now, the iconic structure serves as the Conservancy’s outreach center, combining environmental education with hands-on fun. Here, visitors can learn about the connection between nature, science, and industry, and what we can do to preserve Louisiana’s beautiful outdoors. STEM activities like an interactive sandbox, a native seed station, and underwater robots give visitors a tangible understanding of how we relate to nature. Public events like movie nights and the Lights on the Lake holiday event are an added attraction. As PC celebrates its 35th anniversary, Ms. Trail’s guidance has helped bring science to our community through the operation of this historic landmark.
