I met Rachel Luria, founder and creator of Lady Highway jewelry, while perusing booths at the Freret Holiday Market. From a distance, I was immediately drawn to the unique shapes and curves of her jewelry, so I moved in a little closer. The magical thing about a market or small boutique shop is the ability to chat with the maker, ask specific questions and get a sense of who they are. Instead of laser focusing on her work, we struck up a conversation. Rachel was calm and friendly, and we quickly found common ground as we’d both spent formative years in Manhattan. No stranger to fashion, she attended Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) and worked for several fashion brands before ultimately realizing that world was not for her.  She eventually found New Orleans, with her husband (with whom she plays in a band), and went back to school for social work. But she insists that if she had her way, she’d spend most of her time making jewelry. Â
When it came time to peruse her work, it took a minute. The longer I looked, the more intricate and layered each piece became. What I initially thought of a piece changed 20 seconds later; a tribute to the level of detail and complexity in her work. The combination of colors and materials felt new and truly unique – decadent but also bohemian. I thought to myself, if Cleopatra and Steve Nicks met up at Studio 54, this is what they would be wearing. And who wouldn’t want to party with them? Â
