Having a Fling on Tchoupitoulas
When you walk into 45 Tchoup, it’s easy to feel as if you’ve entered a combination of Cheers – they truly know everyone’s name and drink preference – and an art house. This recently opened bar helmed by owners Debbie Shatz and Frank Mazzanti (you might remember them as your favorite bartenders at Parasol’s) is a picture of comfortable dichotomy. From the original artwork on the walls to the donated license plates across a ceiling beam, from the cabaret-style tables and chairs – the better to watch live music – to the handcrafted long, shining wood bar (made by Shatz’s husband Jeremy) 45 Tchoup is about as New Orleans as you can get. It follows that in addition to a perfect Jameson or Abita pour, 45 Tchoup is becoming known for its delicious and amusing takes on traditional cocktails. The Tchoupitoulas Fling, crafted by Shatz and Mazzanti especially for New Orleans Magazine is a sweet take on classic flavors and just might turn this bar into your bar.
