Just what is noteworthy about June? Around here, it’s the month where “watching the tropics” starts to get serious; it’s also known as the month to get married, and it’s the month when vacation-planning becomes vacation reality.

But for the most part, June is a pretty forgettable month. Oh sure, it’s the month that contains the longest day of the year. Whoopee! More daylight requires more sunscreen. Even the oysters begin to turn a bit icky.

So we think that maybe June should be the month where you have to party just a bit harder and have to be more creative to overcome the sudden stop to the elongated festival season that began back in January.

A perfectly named cocktail for June has been created by Ferrel Dugas, the lovely and quite talented barmistress at Commander’s Palace in the Garden District. Her concoction is easy and can make up for an entire month of nothing special, which here in “The City That Care Forgot” is pretty unusual.

Oops Cocktail
1 ounce Maker’s Mark
1 ounce Grand Marnier
1/2 ounce Fresh Lime Juice
1/4 ounce Cherry Heering
2 dashes of Peychaud’s Bitters

Combine all ingredients into a shaker. Shake and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a flamed orange peel.

As created and served by Ferrel Dugas at Commander’s Palace
