The month of March gives rise to marching, honoring two Old World saints on the streets of the New World’s most festival-happy town.
Ireland’s St. Patrick is fêted with parades throughout the metro area surrounding his feast day, March 17. Then Italy’s St. Joseph receives the same star treatment just a few days later on March 19. In between there are ecumenical groups happy to tie both days, and cultures, together with parades and parties. Nothing wrong with any of that, say Carnival-recovering New Orleanians. Let us do it again!
Staying true to heritage, at least around here, includes adult beverages and cultural cuisines. Chef Matt Murphy’s new pride and joy, The Irish House, is ready for its first year as a destination of all sons and daughters of Erin, as well as those who want to be for just a little while. The Grand Marshal is a cocktail to provoke a celebration, alongside the traditional Fish ’n’ Chips.
In New Orleans, traditions are respected, as long as food and drink are involved.
