Meggan Ory has been passionate about makeup for as long as she can remember. At 19, she began working behind the counters at MAC Cosmetics and Prescriptives, never imagining that her love of makeup would eventually become a career. But she loved it so much that she decided to double down, enrolling at Aveda to become a licensed aesthetician. From there she became a makeup artist for hire and painted the faces of clients at both intimate gatherings and large-scale events.
In 2018, Meggan took her experience and launched an eponymous makeup line, Make up by Meggan. Her goal was simple; create products that streamline your everyday makeup routine. “The number of product choices is really confusing for the average person,” she says. It’s true, walk into any Sephora, and you’ll find grocery store size aisles, lined with seemingly unlimited options. With this in mind, Meggan homed in on the shades she found the most universally flattering, particularly for lips and eyes; lips colors in carefully considered pink tones and deeper, defining shades with an occasional touch of shimmer for eyes. She’s also very proud of her supporting products like the Glow Primer and Second Skin concealer.
On Aug. 23, Meggan will host a tutorial class at her Canal Place store. She hosts these just once or twice a year as a passion project. The class offers a complete make up routine performed on a model. Each step of the process is narrated by Meggan. Questions are welcome and often lead to more niche topics. She says, “Watching makeup tutorials on social media are helpful but there is nothing like seeing it done slowly, step by step in person.” She adds, “You can see my mistakes and my corrections on the fly, just like in a real-world scenario.”
