Leave No Mom Alone: The Best Things to Share with the Women in Your Life

“Shower the people you love with love. Show them the way that you feel.”

James Taylor, Shower the People

Every year around Mother’s Day I try to spend one-on-one time with each of the women who have served as mentors to me throughout my life. My mother died when I was a teenager and I doubt I will ever reach a point where I do not need the guidance they share. As these women are in groups that make them susceptible to contracting The Thing (I am so tired of hearing its actual name), I will be unable to share physical time with many of them this year.

You know who you are. You know you are on my heart. We will be together soon.

That said, many older women will find themselves alone for this Hallmark holiday that has taken on an absurd level of importance in our society. If one such lady is in your orbit operate on the assumption that this “holiday” is a loaded one for her and she is lonely and hurting. Do something nice for her. Cook or bake a little extra, order an extra portion to share, make a bouquet, whatever. Your efforts may amount to the difference between a day that is bearable or one wrought with suicidal ideation. One kind gesture from one person can change another person’s life.

Here are some ideas for sharing with the special women in your life.

FAIT (French for “he/she makes”), a partnership between Kathleen Robinson and her daughters Lauren and Emily Joffrion, is a mobile creative studio. In ordinary times the FAIT ladies bring exotic plants of all varieties to events everywhere welcoming all who are interested to board their truck/mobile solarium, Axil Rose, to set, arrange, mount, pot and assemble plants in a way that reflects their unique creativity and tastes. Though the social aspect of their business is currently sidelined, the krewe at FAIT is busier than ever making deliveries throughout the area to people who want to beautify their homes with live plants and creative projects. Their Mother’s Day Collection is extensive and includes Hoya Kerii (Sweetheart Plants) for $12; an array of orchids starting at $35; mounted Staghorn ferns starting at $55; and so much more. Check out the goods at faitnola.com.

The Edgar “Dooky” Jr. & Leah Chase Family Foundation and Dooky Chase’s Restaurant were able to provide meals to families feeding over 4500 members of our community, thanks to generous donations from rapper L’il Wayne, and local community partners. Meals were provided to area schools, churches and food pantries for distribution, during our Community Give Back Days. Dooky Chase’s Restaurant (2301 Orleans Ave.) will resume offering takeout this Sunday with a special Mother’s Day Creole Brunch for families to pick-up and enjoy in their homes. The Mother’s Day Brunch (Dooky Chase’s Creole gumbo; shrimp and grits; eggs New Orleans – sliced boiled egg over a crabmeat dressing; roasted turkey with au jus gravy; cornbread dressing made with beef and chaurice; glazed ham; Creole string beans; sweet potatoes; and peach cobbler) will serve four for $150. Only pre orders will be accepted and pickup is from noon-4 p.m. on Saturday. Place your order by emailing takeout@dookychaserestaurants.com. Include contact information in email.

Chef Nina Compton will be offering special Mother’s Day Brunch Kits at Compere Lapin (located in the Old No. 77 Hotel & Chandlery, 535 Tchoupitoulas St.). Priced at $65 for two, each kit includes an assortment of house-made pastries, a shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs, smoked fish dip, and granola. Diners must pre-order through email or call the restaurant at least 48 hours in advance between 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. daily. All orders must be placed by Friday, May 8 at 4 p.m. Tropical mimosas and Bloody Marys will be sold separately. To order call (504) 599-2119 or email hello@comperelapin.com.
