Local Stores Highlight What’s Trending in Men’s Fashion

What are men wearing these days? I have no idea. My husband has very little interest in fashion and does not encourage (emphatically discourages) me from buying him any clothing. Apart from restocking socks and underwear, which is only permitted once the hole to item ratio has exceeded even the lowest standards, I do very little. I spend almost no time in men’s clothing stores. But this week, I wandered into a few while running errands, and it surprised me how much fun it was. I didn’t know what I had been missing. Like, the delicate display of earthy colors, touchable fabrics and small tweaks of a pocket or lapel placement. These clothes weren’t begging for attention, they were quietly confident; like any great man should be. Now that we are approaching fall, it seems like there is no better time to search for men’s outerwear. Here are some of the specific recommendations I got from local shops this week:

Perlis has the classics and thoughtfully considers today’s man’s need to multitask. Which is why they carry reversible vests with detachable collars and brands like Patagonia and Peter Millar, always thinking of what elements or unexpected adventures one might be tasked with on any given day.

Kilby recommends their custom safari jacket. It is dressed up enough for dinner or a meeting but also can look relaxed in a modern way. I laid my hands on the wool, and it is so soft and elegant. I also got to see Co-Founder, James Collier in it at the Kilby showroom and it is a vibe – a must for any modern man’s closet. Additionally, the double-breasted merino wool jacket from their customizable menu of items makes a smart, au Courant impression.

Billy Reid promotes their outerwear all year long and I was impressed with the selection, quantity and quality. Daniel Craig wears this exact peacoat as Bond so that seems like a good bet if you can handle the daring feats that might go along with the name. Another one I loved, based on a traditional farmer’s jacket, the wool chore coat felt modern without trying too hard. The olive herringbone color was sumptuous. And lastly, the rain resistant waxed Bond jacket has a detachable quilted liner in a nice striped pattern that gives a pop of personality.

Rubensteins had a couple of outerwear ideas for us as well. Specifically, they offer a made to measure multi weather coat via Atelier Munro. The blazer/shacket hybrid gives off serious cool guy energy. They also love the Canali wool shirt jacket for a casual day to night look.
