Look to the Skies
This month, Louisiana skies will be ablaze with energy.
The fifth annual CenterPoint Energy Red River Balloon Rally, presented by the Louisiana Office of Tourism, will take place June 12-14, sending local and regional balloons over various neighborhoods in the Shreveport and Bossier City area.
Then on the weekend of June 26-28, the second annual Summer Fly In & Vintage War Bird Expo will take over the St. Landry Parish Airport in Opelousas, showcasing the B-17 Bomber, the twin Beech C-45, a Stearman and the SB2C Helldiver. The event will also feature other vintage aircraft, airplane rides, airplane tours, food trucks, classic cars, RC airplanes, live music and activities for the kids.
Because of COVID-19, the Red River Balloon Rally had to be scaled down and will become an overflight only, weather permitting. Pilots are scheduled to launch from various locations.
“Although COVID-19 hijacked many of our spring and summer plans, our team and sponsors thought it would be best to offer our community a cheery sense of ‘feel good,’” said Kelly Wells, executive director of Shreveport-Bossier Sports Commission, in a press release. “This overflight will give us all an opportunity to look into the sky and see brighter days ahead as we plan for 2021.”
Residents and visitors to the twin cities should look for the colorful balloons flying through the sky at these times:
Friday, June 12 at approximately 6 p.m.
Saturday, June 13 at approximately 6:30 a.m.
