Connie Zeanah Atkinson is a professor of New Orleans' music history at the University of New Orleans. Connie is a big fan of Louis Armstrong and knows a great deal about his life. As Connie recounts stories about this beloved New Orleans musician, she shares insights into Louis Armstrong's life and heart. Connie tells us who Satchmo's musical instructors were and explains how much people loved him. She gives us a glimpse into the days of segregation, explains the laws as they related to music clubs, and describes the extent to which Louis Armstrong was involved in Civil Rights.  New Orleans' annual Satchmo Fest in August is not just a place to hear music, it is an opportunity to learn about our city's distinctive musical genre and understand who Louis Armstrong was and how he changed music in New Orleans and the world.

Satchmo Fest lectures begin Friday, Aug. 3, 2012 at the Old US Mint in the French Quarter; the Satchmo Fest celebration with music and food takes place on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 4 and 5 in the French Quarter.
