Friends, let’s not forget the importance of fish. They’re not only delicious, but also strikingly beautiful to look at; well maybe with the exception of the Angler fish. In Louisiana, especially, fish represent our culture and livelihood. They evoke memories of family gatherings and slow afternoons spent casting a reel. They also create jobs and often improve environmental sustainability.
Artists from around the world have long been inspired by the richness of the Mississippi River, the Gulf of Mexico, and their abundant wildlife. From oil paintings to bow ties, creators continue to draw from the fecund beauty of our local waters. In fashion design, we see Gulf-inspired clothing and accessories from beloved Louisiana brands like Mignon Faget, NOLA Couture, Mimosa Handcrafted and Perlis, all helping to shape a distinctly local aesthetic.
But just as in fine art, there are imitators. And just like it’s important to ask for locally caught seafood, the same holds true for your marine-themed fashion choices. According to Louisiana Seafood, “Between 80 and 90 percent of the seafood Americans eat is imported, and half of that is farm-raised.” Even in a place like New Orleans, if you don’t ask for local, you might not get it.
So next time you’re shopping for clothes, remember to ask for something local. It supports our culture, our economy, and the waters that inspire us.
