We take our health care coverage quite seriously. Whether it is presenting lists of doctors, dentists, nursing homes or hospitals, we look for companies with a creditable methodology. We concede that no selection method is perfect, yet we know that thoughtful research can provide better references than word of mouth.
We caution that if a hospital does not make the list it is not necessarily because it is inferior but more likely because it does not offer all the procedures considered for the rankings. Yet in other ways, the hospital may be superior.
Hospitals listed on these pages were determined by HealthGrades, a Colorado-based company specializing in health research. Its emphasis is on specialized care and survival rates. Amenities such as décor and extra services do not, in themselves, qualify a place for the list. Here is a statement prepared by HealthGrades about its methodology:
Hospital-Rating Methodology
How HealthGrades rates hospitals on procedures and diagnoses:
For each hospital, HealthGrades rated different procedures or diagnoses using risk-adjustment methodologies (except maternity care and women’s health). Each of the procedures or diagnoses was rated in one or more categories:
• Survival in-hospital and survival after discharge (based upon mortality outcomes)
• Avoiding complications (based upon complication outcomes)
HealthGrades risk-adjusted the data to ensure a fair comparison between and among hospitals. Each hospital received one of the following ratings for each medical issue:
Best – Actual performance was better than expected.
Average – Actual performance was as expected.
Poor – Actual performance was worse than expected.
Too few cases
HealthGrades quality ratings published in this magazine are 2010-11 ratings, derived from Medicare inpatient data from the MedPAR database (purchased from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, 2007 through 2009 data). Hospitals only receive ratings for procedures or diagnoses if they treat at least 30 cases over a three-year period, including at least five in the most recent year of data.
HealthGrades also recognizes hospitals that perform in the top 10 percent in the nation in each of the specialty care areas, such as cardiac surgery and orthopedics. The HealthGrades’ Specialty Excellence Awards are determined each year and are released in October along with HealthGrades’ annual Hospital Quality in America study.
