NEW ORLEANS (press release) – M.S. Rau is excited to announce its new exhibition, Au Naturel: The Art of the Female Form, which will run March 26 to May 28, 2022 at the gallery at 622 Royal St. in the French Quarter of New Orleans, Louisiana. The show, which is FREE and open to the public, explores this prolific and ever-alluring subject through over four hundred years of fine art, contemplating the styles, artists and themes that have defined and redefined the nude over the centuries.
Au Naturel: The Art of the Female Form will feature paintings and sculpture specially curated from M.S. Rau’s extensive and exclusive collection of works secured from around the globe. Guests will have the opportunity to discover the nude through the eyes and brushes of masters such as Jan Brueghel the Younger, Guillaume Seignac, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Frederick Carl Frieseke, and René Magritte.
“Representing the human body has been one of the major themes throughout art history since prehistoric times,” explained Bill Rau, the 3rd generation owner M.S. Rau. “The body is a fantastic source of inspiration for an artist because it is simultaneously the embodiment of beauty, desire, reverie and the forbidden. It is often nude paintings that cause scandal in art, and when artists create imagery of the human body, it can be very personal and sometimes even against the artistic rules of their time.”
The compilation of these works reveals the pivotal role of the nude in art, and how the subject has been idealized and modernized across history. Both the controversies and triumphs surrounding this subject will be considered in the show, as will the innumerable ways the female figure can be interpreted, displayed, viewed and celebrated.
